Hurricane Season Is Here – Is Your Insurance Ready?
Hurricane season is well underway, and while we all hope severe weather stays away, now is the best time to make sure your insurance coverage is ready if it doesn’t.
At our agency, we encourage homeowners to review their insurance before a storm is in the Gulf. Once a named storm is approaching, insurance companies may temporarily stop allowing new policies or changes to existing coverage.
Review Your Homeowners Coverage
Take a few minutes to review your policy and ask yourself:
- Is my home insured for today’s rebuilding cost?
- Do I understand my deductible?
- Have I made improvements to my home that should be added to my policy?
- Do I have enough personal property coverage for my belongings?
A yearly review can help identify coverage gaps before you need to file a claim.
Remember: Flood Insurance Is Separate
One of the biggest misconceptions is that homeowners insurance covers flooding. In most cases, flood damage requires a separate flood insurance policy.
Even homes outside of designated flood zones can experience flooding after heavy rain or hurricanes. It’s worth discussing your property’s flood risk with your insurance agent.
Create a Home Inventory
Walk through your home and take photos or videos of each room, furniture, electronics, jewelry, and other valuables.
Store these photos in the cloud or another secure location. Having a current inventory can make the claims process much easier if you ever experience damage.
Prepare Before the Storm
Don’t wait until the last minute. Make sure you have:
- Flashlights and extra batteries
- Bottled water
- Non-perishable food
- Prescription medications
- Portable phone chargers
- Copies of important documents stored in a waterproof container
Being prepared helps reduce stress if severe weather affects your area.
Have Questions About Your Coverage?
Insurance isn’t just about having a policy—it’s about understanding what your policy covers before you need it.
If you’d like a complimentary review of your homeowners, auto, flood, or umbrella insurance, our team is happy to answer your questions and help you understand your options.
Preparing today can make all the difference tomorrow. We hope you never have to file a claim, but if you do, having the right coverage in place can provide valuable peace of mind.
